John Pershing is a Vice President of Engineering at 1010data, a New York City based big data analytics company that builds a platform which enables interactive high-performance analytics on petabyte-scale data. At 1010data he built the interfacing engineering team and is responsible for 1010data's "Discover" line of products, a self-service version of their platform. He received a BS in Computer Science and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 2010.
While at the University of Rochester, John was president of the Computer Science Undergraduate Council, president of the Chess & Go Club, and a member of the Alpine Ski team. After graduating, he found a passion mentoring current students. In service of this, he volunteers as an alumni "real reader" for the course WRT 273 Communicating Your Professional Identity, coaching students on how to improve their résumés and better communicate with potential employers.
Wanting to stay as involved as possible with Rochester's Computer Science Department, he has worked with 1010data to sponsor the department's annual hackathon and has acted as a mentor for student hackers participating in the event.
