Award for Outstanding Contribution to the University of Rochester Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences New York State Economic Impact for 2010-2011

Nov 18, 2011: At the 2011 CEIS annual meeting, the Wireless Communications and Networking Group was presented with an award for "Outstanding Contribution to the University of Rochester Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences New York State Economic Impact for 2010-2011." This award was presented based on the economic impact derived from the WCNG research with Harris Corporation. WCNG has been partnering with Harris Corporation for over 8 years to develop new protocols and algorithms to support real-time voice and video communication over mobile ad hoc networks. Congratulations to Dr. Bulent Tavli, Dr. Tolga Numanoglu, Bora Karaoglu and Surjya Ray, who have all worked on this research over the years.

Graduation of Tianqi Wang

Sept 9, 2011: Congratulations to Dr. Wang, who successfully passed his PhD defense!
Dr. Wang received his B.Eng. degree in Communications Engineering from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2004, and M.Eng. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2007 and from the University of Rochester in 2010, respectively. His research interests lie in the area of wireless communications and wireless networking, including cross layer design of energy efficient wireless sensor networks, stochastic modeling, and information theory.

Dr. Wang is currently a Senior System Engineer at Qualcomm Atheros Division in San Jose, CA .

2011 Internships

2011 was a good year for internship here at WCNG. Tianqi kicked off the year with a spring internship at UCB Pharma where he worked on interdisciplinary research in the field of bioinformatics, communication theory and information theory.

Surjya and Na interned at Toyota ITC and Microsoft Research, respectively over the summer. Surjya worked on Reliability of in-vehicle Wireless Sensor Network communications developing a framework for the next gen intra-vehicular sensor network systems with 802.15.4 and ethernet. Na worked on Designed and implemented a mobile emotion sensor on Windows Phone 7 called ’listen-n-feel’, which predicts emotion based on speech.

Bora ended the year with his research (confidential!) on GPRS systems at GE.

Graduation of Ou Yang

Aug 3, 2011: Congratulations to Dr. Yang, who successfully defended her PhD thesis!
Dr. Yang received her Bachelor of Science from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 1999. She attended the Electronics Engineering Department at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China from 2003 to 2006 and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Electronics Engineering in 2006. She began graduate studies at the University of Rochester in 2006 and received the Master of Science degree from the University of Rochester in 2008. She worked with Aspera, Inc. during the summer 2010.

How do Toddlers Deal with Stress? New Wireless Research by
Professor Wendi Heinzelman

Wendi Heinzelman and Melissa Sturge-Apple
A new wireless system developed by University researchers is offering an unprecedented look at how toddlers deal with stressful situations.

Called WiPsy (Wireless Technology for Psychological Research), the technology is the result of collaboration by the University’s Mt. Hope Family Center and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering through an effort called Project Connect.

“The WiPsy system is going to give us a very sophisticated and unobtrusive way to assess a child’s reactions with computerized physiological and behavioral data,” says Melissa Sturge-Apple, a research associate at the Mt. Hope Family Center.
