GEMCloud: Utilizing Android Devices to Aid in Energy Saving
and Scientific Discovery

Principal Investigator: Wendi Heinzelman

This document describes a research study that is being conducted by Professor Wendi Heinzelman from the University of Rochester's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
If...
1) you are at least 18 years old, and
2) you have access to an Android mobile device
... then we would like to invite you to participate in our GEMCloud study!

Study Purpose
The purpose of this study is to analyze the operation of our GEMCloud computing infrastructure using as cloud servers Android mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets running the Android operating system) that are simultaneously being used for their intended functions (e.g., phone, web interface, computing device). The goal is to determine how users interact with the GEMCloud infrastructure and whether using GEMCloud has any impact on the users' experiences with their mobile devices.

Study Procedure
If you decide to take part in this study, you will be asked to
1) download and install the GEMCloud application running the SAINT2 algorithm for protein structure prediction on your Android mobile device;
2) enter your email address within GEMCloud;
3) set up the parameters for running this application (e.g., can the application utilize your mobile data service or only operate over WiFi?);
4) participate in a pre-study survey to answer questions about your expectations with regard to helping with computation that has the potential to impact scientific discovery and medical research, as well as your expectations with regard to helping with reducing energy consumption for computation by providing idle CPU time on your mobile device(s); and
5) participate in a post-study survey to answer the same questions as in the pre-survey as well as providing us with information about the user interface design (e.g., additional features you would like to see, the usefulness of existing features), any potential interference of normal device usage caused by GEMCloud, and any concerns and suggestions you might have regarding GEMCloud.

We estimate that approximately 200 participants will take part in this study. Your participation will last for 1 month, after which you will be asked to fill out a survey about your experience with GEMCloud.

Study Risks and Benefits
There are minimal risks of participating in the study. There is a risk related to privacy and confidentiality related to providing the research team access to your individual data on your phone. To minimize this risk, we will store the information collected from your mobile device regarding your GEMCloud usage, your device's serial number, as well as your personal information such as your name, phone number, address and email address, in a password-protected GoogleDoc or on a password-protected computer. There is also a potential risk that your device may run more slowly as a result of participation in this study. This risk is similar to the risk of downloading and running any app on your mobile device. The Android operating system has the built-in feature of terminating applications causing alarmingly high-CPU load, which provides a layer of protection against this risk.
If you wish to end your participation in the study, you may do so at any time by deleting the GEMCloud app from your Android device. At the end of the study, you should delete the GEMCloud app from your Android device.

During the study, we will automatically collect the following information from your device when GEMCloud is operating:
1. User account information (i.e., email address entered into the app during the initial setup)
2. Preference settings
3. IP address of the mobile device
4. Connectivity of the mobile device (mobile data or WiFi)
5. Version of Android operating system running on the mobile device
6. Make and model of the mobile device
7. Hardware specifications of the mobile device (e.g., processor type, memory size, available storage space)
8. International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the mobile device(to uniquely identify a device and associate collected data with that device)
9. Data files generated by GEMCloud after each computing task is completed
10. Start and end time and date of each computing task
11. CPU load and battery level during each computing task

There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study.

Payment
There is no payment for your participation in the study.

Sponsor The University of Rochester is receiving payment from the University of Rochester Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences, a New York State Center for Advanced Technology, and UCB, Inc. for conducting this research study.

Confidentiality
The University of Rochester makes every effort to keep the information collected from you private. In order to do so, we will store the information collected from your mobile device regarding your GEMCloud usage, your device's serial number, as well as your personal information such as your name, phone number, address and email address, on either a password-protected GoogleDoc or a password-protected computer. Sometimes, however, researchers need to share information that may identify you with people that work for the University, regulators or the study sponsor. If this does happen we will take precautions to protect the information you have provided. Results of the research may be presented at meetings or in publications, but personally identifying data will not be used.

Voluntary Participation
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You are free not to participate or to withdraw at any time, for whatever reason. To withdraw from the study, you simply delete the application from your phone. No matter what decision you make, there will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. At the end of the study, you should delete the application from your phone.
Please contact the University of Rochester Research Subjects Review Board at 265 Crittenden Blvd., CU 420315, Rochester, NY 14642, Telephone (585) 276-0005 or (877) 449-4441 for the following reasons:
- You wish to talk to someone other than the research staff about your rights as a research subject;
- To voice concerns about the research;
- To provide input concerning the research process;
- In the event the study staff could not be reached.
