Taimi Marple Receives Dottie Welch Award For The Second Time

Taimi Marple, Biomedical Engineering (BME) Undergraduate Coordinator, has been recognized as the first two-time recipient of the Hajim School’s Dottie Welch Student Enrichment Award. Marple, who recently retired on May 2 after 45 years of dedicated service to the University of Rochester, was previously honored with the award in 2018. She was presented the 2025 award by Dean Wendi Heinzelman at this year's Design Day on May 5.
Presented annually, the Dottie Welch Student Enrichment Award celebrates a staff member in the Hajim School whose commitment and performance significantly enhance the student experience—echoing the legacy of Dottie Welch, Marple’s predecessor and mentor in the undergraduate coordinator role.
Students praised Marple during the nomination process for her unwavering support, warmth, and tireless enthusiasm. One student wrote,
“All of the undergrads in the BME department know they can count on her for pretty much anything and everything. Whether it’s about classes, advising, or major requirements, I knew I could reach out and get a helpful answer within the day. She’s incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely wants us to succeed.”
Another student highlighted her resilience and kindness in the face of constant demands:
“I can’t even imagine how many emails Taimi gets in a day. And yet, without fail, she gets the job done—promptly, kindly, and always with a willingness to listen to a student dropping by her office. I immediately thought of her when reading the award description.”
Many emphasized how integral Marple has been to the department:
“She is the point-person for all things BME and has her hand on the pulse of the department.”
“The senior BME class would be thrilled to see her honored with this award—it’s a meaningful way for her to retire knowing just how deeply appreciated and valued she truly is.”
Carla Boff, BME Administrator, added:
“I am so honored to have worked with Taimi over the past 10 years. Taimi has a wealth of knowledge and has shown such dedication and loyalty to the BME Students, Faculty, Staff, and the UR Community. I will miss Taimi’s energy and amazing smile!
Taimi ~ Thank you for your 12 years of service working in BME and 46 years working at the University of Rochester!"
Marple’s second recognition with this prestigious award is a fitting tribute to a career defined by service, compassion, and excellence—mirroring the legacy of the award’s namesake and her own inspiring contributions to the BME community.
