Abstract
Bio-laser is an emerging technology in biosensing and imaging. In contrast to traditional fluorescence-based measurement, a bio-laser uses laser emission as the sensing signal, which has strong intensity, non-linear threshold behavior, and narrow linewidth, and is free of fluorescence background. In this presentation, I will first describe the principle of bio-lasers and laser emission-based microscopy. Then I will discuss a few bio-laser applications with a focus on cancer cell/tissue analysis.
Biography
Professor Xudong (Sherman) Fan obtained his BS and MS from Peking University in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and PhD from the University of Oregon in 2000. He is the Richard A. Auhll Professor of College of Engineering and School of Medicine at the University of Michigan, Associate Director of the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation, and Thrust Leader of Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems.
Professor Fan’s research lies in the interface of photonics, engineering, microfabrication, microfluidics, and chemical/biomolecular analysis, bioinstrumentation, and biomedicine. Prof. Fan has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and >40 issued/pending patents. Prof. Fan is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (Optica), SPIE, and Royal Society of Chemistry.
