Abstract

We will discuss recent advances involving parallel manipulation of electromagnetic waves on chip-scale photonics using nonlinear photonic devices, computational optimization, and photonic-electronic systems. This enables applications including, but not limited to, data communications at terabits per second. Nonlinear photonics, which transduces a narrow-linewidth laser from one frequency mode into hundreds of frequency modes, will be discussed alongside our experimental insights into second- and third-order nonlinear photonic processes, classical and non-classical parametric oscillations, and optical gain elements. Additionally, we will cover computational optimization for designing photonic devices with desired functionalities and independently controlling optical waves in spatial, spectral, and temporal domains to unlock new functionalities in integrated photonics.

Kiyoul Yang

Kiyoul Yang received his Ph.D. degree from the California Institute of Technology in 2018. After completing his postdoctoral training at Stanford, he has been an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Harvard since 2023. His research is in the areas of cavity quantum nonlinear photonics, computational optimization, and photonic systems aimed at building photonic hardware to study computing, communications, imaging, and ultrafast physics. He received the DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2023.
