Chunlei Guo

Chunlei Guo is a Professor in The Institute of Optics at University of Rochester. He is also a Professor in Physics and Materials Science at the University and a Senior Scientist at Laboratory for Laser Energetics. His research spans femtosecond laser-matter interactions and advanced photonics and materials.

He received his Ph.D. in Physics from University of Connecticut, and was later named one of the University's 40 Under 40 Outstanding Alumni. He completed his postdoctoral training at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where his work was awarded the Postdoctoral Publication Prize in Experimental Sciences.

His research at Rochester has led to the discoveries of a wide range of highly functionalized materials produced through femtosecond laser processing, including the so-called black and colored metals, and superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces. These discoveries could enable a wide range of technological applications and have been extensively featured in news media (read more), including 5 times in the New York Times.

He is an elected Fellow of American Physical Society, Optica (formerly OSA), and Int'l Academy of Photonics and Laser Engineering. He has authored about 370 refereed journal publications and delivered more than 200 plenary, keynote, invited talks and lectures, including on the TED stage. He also plays an active role in serving the scientific community
