Medical Applications of 3D Printing

Earl W. Brinkman Professor, Rochester Institute of Technology, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Abstract:

3D printing technologies have received a great deal of attention in recent years. What few people realize is that the medical community was responsible for driving much of the early innovations in this field. This talk will highlight a number of interesting ways in which different 3D printing technologies have been used in medicine. Case studies to be discussed will touch on the use of pre-surgical planning models for an osteotomy, the prototyping of miniature end effectors for minimally invasive mitral valve repair, the design and fabrication of custom titanium bone implants, and the use of full color 3D printing to produce bone density models.
