Dalecki Bestowed with Hajim School Lifetime Achievement Award
Wendi Heinzelman, Dean of the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Diane Dalecki at the BME Graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
An internationally-recognized researcher in the biological effects of ultrasound and founding member of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is being hailed with the Hajim School’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s recipient is Diane Dalecki, the Kevin J. Parker Distinguished Professor in Biomedical Engineering.
Dalecki is a professor of biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering. She also serves as the director of the Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound, which unites professionals in the engineering, medical, and applied sciences communities at the University of Rochester, Rochester General Hospital, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
“The BME department, the Hajim School, and the University of Rochester are so fortunate to count Diane among their ranks,” said Stephen McAleavey, associate professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. “She is an outstanding scientist, teacher, mentor, and colleague, recognized here and abroad for the meticulous approach she brings to her every endeavor. Her many years of service have greatly enhanced the standing of our department, the success of her colleagues, and the careers of her students.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes faculty for outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and leadership over the course of their career, adds to a long list of accolades from both the University and her research community.
Dalecki has been a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) bioeffects committee, and twice served as its chair. On the international stage, she has served as a member of World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology working groups on the safety of ultrasound contrast agents, and of Doppler ultrasound for first-trimester fetal imaging. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, of the Acoustical Society of America, and of the AIUM.
Within the University Dalecki was honored as a Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering in 2016 and in 2019 she was named the Kevin J. Parker Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering. With her appointment as chair of the department in 2016, she continued to pursue her vision to grow the department and deepen its ties to the Medical Center.
A testament to her work as an exemplary teacher, Dalecki received the Goergen Award for Excellence and Artistry in Undergraduate Education in 2002. University of Rochester undergraduates have elected her as the Engineering Professor of the Year award three times, in 1999, 2006, and 2010.
“As a founding BME faculty member, Diane has helped shape the department into the vibrant and successful department it has become,” said McAleavey. “At every stage in the BME department’s history, Diane has done the often-challenging work needed to make it a success.”
