Assistant/Associate/Full Professor, Instructional Track

The University of Rochester’s Goergen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence seeks to hire an outstanding candidate for an Instructional Faculty position (open to candidates at all ranks – Assistant, Associate, or Full) in Data Science for our recently approved online MS degree in Healthcare Data Science and AI with a start date of preferably Spring or Summer 2025.

This online MS program is a brand-new initiative developed jointly with the Health Lab at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), complementing our current undergraduate and graduate in-person education programs. Target audience for this online program includes professionals from various backgrounds including those already working in the healthcare domain in technical or clinical roles and looking to gain relevant skills in data analytics and data science applied to the healthcare industry. With an online offering, we strive to have a broad reach and impact beyond the immediate Rochester region into New York state as well as nationally and globally.

The candidate will have the opportunity to innovate and shape the curriculum and program offerings as the program matures to identify new audiences and delivery formats. The candidate will have multiple opportunities to collaborate with researchers, data scientists and clinicians across campus in these endeavours.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach entry and advanced level courses for master’s level students in Healthcare Data Science. Topics of courses include applied machine/deep learning and data mining, healthcare database systems (EHR), data visualization and exploratory data analysis, healthcare data privacy, ethics, fairness, and the culminating data science capstones. Opportunities exist for developing and teaching additional courses in areas of healthcare data privacy, ethics, fairness, computer vision, and text analytics/NLP/LLMs, depending on the candidate’s interests and background.
  • Participate in department education initiatives such as student advising, build relationships with external companies/partners to source capstone projects, serve on admissions committees for graduate program admissions, collaborate on design and revision of curricula.
  • Manage the day-to-day administration of this MS program including admission/enrollment management, marketing the program regionally/nationally and internationally, assigning internal/external/adjunct instructors to courses, and coordinating with other related administrative functions within the university.
  • Contribute to broad institute initiatives including new professional graduate programs and certificate programs working collaboratively with industry stakeholders, faculty, and university administrators to understand unmet needs aligning with appropriate university resources.

Salary range (12-month salary): $90,000 to $140,000 (depending on rank)

The referenced pay range represents the full base range of pay for this job. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Applicants must have a strong background in Data Science and a Ph.D. in a related field including but not limited to Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, as well as experience in and knowledge about graduate teaching and curricular issues.

Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience and background in applying data science and AI techniques to healthcare problems either via prior academic research/teaching and/or industry experience.

While the instructional role for the online course delivery can be fulfilled remotely, the administrative responsibilities will require on-campus interactions with university administrators and faculty. Preference will be given to candidates in the Rochester area or willing to relocate.
