Dalal Family Postdoctoral Fellowship in AI Ethics

The University of Rochester’s Goergen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (GIDS-AI) invites applications for the Dalal Family Postdoctoral Fellowship in AI Ethics.

This fellowship aims to advance research and teaching focused on responsible design, development, deployment, governance, and societal implications of AI systems. The Dalal Family Postdoctoral Fellowship supports applied research on AI and its societal impact, informing policy and addressing real-world ethical challenges across human life.

For the purposes of this Fellowship, “AI Ethics” refers to scholarship related to artificial intelligence and addressing the responsible design, development, deployment, governance, and societal implications of artificial intelligence systems. Relevant areas may include, but are not limited to, algorithmic fairness and bias, transparency and accountability of AI systems, AI safety and alignment, privacy and data ethics, human-centered AI design, and the governance and regulation of artificial intelligence technologies.

Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue innovative research in the human-centered development and application of AI while working closely with one or more GIDS-AI faculty mentors.

Dalal Family Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a stipend, mentorship, teaching opportunities, and support for interdisciplinary collaboration for up to two years.

Fellows will have a teaching or instructional responsibility equivalent to one full-course assignment per year in AI Ethics, further extending the fellowship’s impact on students at the University.

Dalal Family Postdoctoral Fellows will be encouraged to participate in seminars, lectures, workshops, or other scholarly activities that advance discussion of the ethical and societal implications of artificial intelligence within the University community.

Each fellow will be mentored by and collaborate closely with one or more GIDS-AI faculty members. Applicants are encouraged to review the research interests of GIDS-AI faculty. In their application materials, candidates should identify the faculty members whose research aligns with their interests and with whom they would be most interested in collaborating during the postdoctoral fellowship.

Applicants must possess a strong background and an established scholarly research record in at least one area of AI Ethics, as defined above, and hold a Ph.D. in a related field.

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  1. A cover letter identifying one or two GIDS-AI faculty members with whom the applicant would like to work
  2. A curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of publications
  3. A research statement
  4. A teaching statement
  5. The names and contact information of two references.
