Alumnus Highlight
In 1972, David Stoltzmann completed his Master of Science degree in Optics at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics. Since then, his career has been closely linked to the field.
Today, through this special feature highlighting an alumnus, we will learn about some of David's professional journey.
David's fascination with optics began with his interest in amateur astronomical telescopes. This passion led him to study optical theory and applications and ultimately inspired him to establish his own company. In 1989, he founded Optical Engineering of Minnesota (OEM), a company dedicated to developing advanced optical solutions for forensic and medical equipment.
David's designs have made a significant impact on the field of optics. His breakthroughs in fingerprint and palm print scanning technologies are used by hundreds of companies worldwide. Additionally, his development of Keplerian and Galilean surgical optical instruments has greatly enhanced the quality and safety of surgeries, underscoring the crucial role of high-quality optical design in modern medicine.
Maintaining a connection with David is invaluable to the Institute of Optics. Reflecting on his experiences, David shared, "Before the total solar eclipse on April 8, the Alumni Relations Department provided safe eclipse viewing eyeglasses to many people, including our family. We used those glasses during the eclipse, and we also were able to take some photos through four telescopes we set up in Texas."
David Stoltzmann’s story illustrates how an optical engineer can transform his passion and expertise into innovations that significantly impact society. His journey reminds us that no matter where we are, we should strive for excellence and innovation, continually pushing the frontiers of technology.
